Oil Rig on the river Tees JLP01_08_099191
Graythorp, Hartlepool. An aerial view of tug boats towing the oil platform Graythorp I along the Tees Estuary away from Graythorp.
In the early 1970s Laing Pipelines Offshore constructed the Graythorp fabrication yard and dry dock on the site of the old William Gray Shipyard. The company created a dry dock which was used for the construction of fixed platform North Sea drilling rigs for the BP North Sea Oil Project. Graythorp I had its christening ceremony on June 4th and was launched on Saturday 29th June 1974, heading off for the Forties Oil Field 250 miles away

EDITORS COMMENTS
This aerial view captures the impressive sight of tug boats gracefully guiding the oil rig Graythorp I along the picturesque river Tees. The photograph, taken in the early 1970s, showcases a significant moment in maritime history as Laing Pipelines Offshore constructed their state-of-the-art fabrication yard and dry dock on the site of the renowned William Gray Shipyard. The Graythorp fabrication yard became a hub for innovation and expertise, playing a crucial role in constructing fixed platform North Sea drilling rigs for BP's ambitious North Sea Oil Project. This particular oil rig, christened on June 4th and launched on June 29th, 1974, embarked on an arduous journey to reach its destination - the Forties Oil Field located approximately 250 miles away. The image not only highlights the engineering marvel that is an offshore oil rig but also pays homage to marine engineering works that have shaped our industrial landscape. It serves as a testament to human ingenuity and determination as we continue to explore new frontiers in energy production. This remarkable print by A© Historic England Archive invites us to reflect upon our rich maritime heritage while appreciating how far we have come in harnessing natural resources for progress.
