Graythorp, Hartlepool. An aerial view of the oil platform Graythorp I floating in the flooded basin of the dry dock at Graythorp.
In the early 1970s Laing Pipelines Offshore constructed the Graythorp fabrication yard and dry dock on the site of the old William Gray Shipyard. The company created a dry dock which was used for the construction of fixed platform North Sea drilling rigs for the BP North Sea Oil Project. Graythorp I had its christening ceremony on June 4th and was launched on Saturday 29th June 1974, heading off for the Forties Oil Field 250 miles away

EDITORS COMMENTS
This aerial view captures the awe-inspiring sight of the oil platform Graythorp I floating gracefully in the flooded basin of the dry dock at Graythorp. The photo print, taken in the early 1970s, showcases Laing Pipelines Offshore's remarkable engineering feat as they constructed this impressive fabrication yard and dry dock on the historic grounds of William Gray Shipyard. The image transports us back to a time when North Sea drilling rigs were being built for BP's ambitious North Sea Oil Project. With precision and skill, workers utilized this very dry dock to construct fixed platforms that would venture into the vast depths of the Forties Oil Field located 250 miles away. On June 4th, amidst great anticipation and excitement, Graythorp I was christened before its grand launch on Saturday, June 29th, 1974. This momentous occasion marked a significant milestone in marine engineering history as it set sail towards its destined location. The photograph serves as a testament to human ingenuity and perseverance in conquering new frontiers. It immortalizes an era where innovation met ambition and paved the way for groundbreaking advancements within the oil industry. As we gaze upon this snapshot from Historic England Archive captured by A© Johansson Photography, we are reminded of our ability to overcome challenges and push boundaries beyond what was once deemed possible.
