1754 1782 1833 Colonel Depicted Lieutenant Revolutionary Wars Banastre Tarleton
EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the likeness of Sir Banastre Tarleton, a British soldier of great notoriety during the Revolutionary Wars in America. Depicted here as a Lieutenant Colonel, Tarleton rose through the ranks of the British Army with remarkable speed and distinction. Born in 1754, Tarleton began his military career in 1772, serving in the British garrison in Gibraltar. However, it was his actions during the American Revolution that would make him a household name. Tarleton gained infamy for his brutal tactics and daring raids against American forces. One of his most notable exploits was the capture of the American cavalry commander, Colonel Daniel Morgan, at the Battle of Saratoga in 1777. Tarleton's raid on Morgan's camp in the dead of night, resulting in the capture of over 600 American soldiers, became known as the "Tarleton's Quarter" incident, as Tarleton reportedly gave no quarter to his prisoners. Despite his reputation as a ruthless soldier, Tarleton was also known for his gallantry and daring in battle. He was wounded several times and was once rescued from capture by his own troops. Tarleton's military career continued after the American Revolution, and he served with distinction in the French Revolutionary Wars, earning the title of Sir in 1792. This portrait, created in 1833, depicts Tarleton in his later years as a seasoned and respected military leader. The painting captures the intensity and determination in his eyes, reflecting the indomitable spirit of a soldier who left an indelible mark on history.
