HMS Beagle Ship laid up Darwins Voyage
" Beagle laid ashore, River Santa Cruz". Copperplate engraving, art by Conrad Martens, engraved by T. Landseer. Published by H. Colburn 1838. Plate from The Narrative of the Surveying Voyages of HMS Adventure and Beagle. The Beagle was grounded for repairs on the 16th April 1834 to repair damage caused by a rock at Port Desire and to check the copper sheets were in tact (Fitzroy notes they were about to enter the Pacific where worms soon eat their way through unprotected planks). They found that a piece of the false keel had been knocked off and the copper was heavily rubbed in places. The carpenter Mr. May repaired it all in one tide. The Beagle undertook a repainting and refit while Fitzroy, Darwin and a small crew explored several days upriver

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic moment when the HMS Beagle ship was laid up during Darwin's voyage. The intricate copperplate engraving, skillfully created by Conrad Martens and engraved by T. Landseer, showcases the remarkable artistry of this era. Published in 1838 by H. Colburn as part of "The Narrative of the Surveying Voyages of HMS Adventure and Beagle" this plate offers a glimpse into an important chapter in scientific exploration. The image depicts the Beagle grounded for repairs on April 16th, 1834, after sustaining damage from a rock at Port Desire. Fitzroy, Darwin, and a small crew embarked on an exploratory journey while skilled carpenter Mr. May diligently repaired the vessel within one tide. This snapshot reveals not only their determination to continue their mission but also highlights the challenges faced during these expeditions. As we delve into this artwork's monochrome beauty, it evokes feelings of awe towards those who ventured into uncharted territories to expand our understanding of nature and humanity itself. From South America to Tierra del Fuego, these brave explorers encountered diverse cultures such as the Fuegians while battling marine worms that threatened their ship's integrity. Paul D. Stewart masterfully encapsulates this significant historical event through his lens, reminding us of Darwin's groundbreaking work that would later shape our understanding with "The Origin of Species". This print serves as a testament to human curiosity and resilience in pursuit of knowledge about our world.
