Mountain gorilla C014 / 0983
Mountain gorilla. Silverback male mountain gorilla (Gorilla beringei beringei) sitting in a forest. Mountain gorillas are found in cloud forests high on the slopes of the Virunga volcanoes between Rwanda, Uganda and Zaire. The high elevation and rainfall makes this habitat wet and cold. The adults eat many kilograms of vegetation daily (roots, leaves and stems) and can reach over 2 metres in height. A slow reproductive rate has left mountain gorillas vulnerable to habitat destruction, poaching and war, making them highly endangered. Photographed in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the majestic presence of Mountain gorilla C014 / 0983, a silverback male mountain gorilla (Gorilla beringei beringei), as he sits peacefully in his natural habitat. The dense forest surrounding him creates a mystical atmosphere, characteristic of the cloud forests found high on the slopes of the Virunga volcanoes between Rwanda, Uganda, and Zaire. The mountain gorillas' adaptation to this unique environment is evident through their impressive stature, reaching over 2 meters in height. These gentle giants sustain themselves by consuming several kilograms of vegetation daily, including roots, leaves, and stems. However, despite their resilience and strength, these remarkable creatures face numerous threats that have rendered them highly endangered. Habitat destruction caused by human activities such as deforestation poses a significant risk to their survival. Additionally, poaching and conflicts have further exacerbated their vulnerable status. This slow reproductive rate makes it even more crucial for conservation efforts to protect these incredible animals. Photographed within Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda by PETER J. RAYMOND/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY, this image serves as a poignant reminder of the urgent need to safeguard these magnificent creatures and preserve their delicate ecosystem for future generations. It encapsulates both the beauty and fragility of nature while highlighting our responsibility to ensure the survival of endangered species like the mountain gorillas in Central Africa's biodiverse rainforests.
