EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the majestic Burmese Pagoda in Eden Gardens, Calcutta, circa 1909. Created by George Rose, this image is part of a set of stereocard views titled "Studies through the Stereoscope". The pagoda itself was brought from Prome in Burma in 1854 by Lord Dalhousie and erected within the gardens, which now lie in Kolkata, India. The photograph showcases the intricate architecture and religious significance of this Buddhist temple. Standing tall against a picturesque landscape, it serves as a testament to both Burmese and Indian culture. The man featured in the foreground adds a sense of scale to the grandeur of the pagoda. George Rose's expertise behind the lens beautifully captures every detail of this historical site. His mastery is further enhanced when viewed on a Sun Sculpture stereoscope made by Underwood & Underwood. As we gaze upon this remarkable image, we are transported back to an era where clothing styles were different, with men donning traditional attire such as pith helmets and uniforms. This snapshot not only documents architectural beauty but also provides insight into cultural practices during that time period. With its rich history and religious significance, this print allows us to appreciate both George Rose's skillful photography and our shared heritage across borders.
