Graythorp, Hartlepool. A view of the oil platform Graythorp I floating in the flooded basin of the dry dock at Graythorp.
In the early 1970s Laing Pipelines Offshore constructed the Graythorp fabrication yard and dry dock on the site of the old William Gray Shipyard. The company created a dry dock which was used for the construction of fixed platform North Sea drilling rigs for the BP North Sea Oil Project. Graythorp I had its christening ceremony on June 4th and was launched on Saturday 29th June 1974, heading off for the Forties Oil Field 250 miles away

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the awe-inspiring sight of the oil platform Graythorp I floating gracefully in the flooded basin of the dry dock at Graythorp. Taken in the early 1970s, this image showcases a significant moment in marine engineering history. Laing Pipelines Offshore undertook an ambitious project to construct the Graythorp fabrication yard and dry dock on the grounds of the old William Gray Shipyard. The purpose-built dry dock became instrumental in building fixed platform North Sea drilling rigs for BP's pioneering North Sea Oil Project. On June 4th, with great fanfare, Graythorp I was christened before being launched on Saturday, June 29th, 1974. This remarkable structure embarked on its journey to reach its destination - Forties Oil Field located approximately 250 miles away. The photograph not only highlights technical prowess but also pays homage to human ingenuity and determination. It serves as a testament to mankind's ability to conquer new frontiers and harness nature's resources for progress. Preserved by Historic England Archive, this snapshot offers us a glimpse into an era when offshore oil exploration was revolutionizing energy production. It reminds us of our constant pursuit of innovation and our relentless drive towards sustainable development. Let this image transport you back in time as you marvel at both the grandeur of engineering achievements and their lasting impact on society.
