Professor Treitschke, (1919). Creator: Unknown
Professor Treitschke, (1919). Portrait of German historian and political writer Heinrich Gotthard von Treitschke (1834-1896). Treitschke was an outspoken nationalist, who favoured German colonialism and opposed the British Empire. The greatest modern German historian, whose writings and influence have created the scornful antipathy and public opinion against England in Germany. It is probable war would never have taken place without him. He has earnestly preached the supersession of Englands supremacy by Germany and of the future of Germany as a great world Power. From " The History of the Great European War: its causes and effects", Vol. I, by W. Stanley Macbean Knight. [Caxton Pulishing Company, Limited, London, 1919]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the stern yet commanding presence of Professor Treitschke, a renowned German historian and political writer from the late 19th century. The unknown creator has skillfully portrayed Treitschke's bearded countenance, emphasizing his intellectual prowess and strong nationalist beliefs. Treitschke was an influential figure in Germany during his time, advocating for German colonialism while vehemently opposing the British Empire. His writings and ideas played a significant role in shaping public opinion against England in Germany, ultimately contributing to the tensions that led to World War I. As stated by W. Stanley Macbean Knight in "The History of the Great European War: its causes and effects" it is even suggested that war may never have occurred without Treitschke's influence. In this portrait, we see a man who dedicated himself to preaching Germany's rise as a great world power, envisioning its future supremacy over England. His intense gaze reflects his unwavering commitment to these ideals. This photograph serves as a historical testament to Professor Treitschke's impact on German society at the turn of the 20th century. It offers us a glimpse into the mind of an influential thinker whose nationalist fervor helped shape geopolitical events during one of history's most tumultuous periods - World War I.
