EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the valuable freehold land and minerals at Brightside, which were up for auction in 1852. The accompanying sale particulars reveal a range of enticing lots that attracted potential buyers from far and wide. Lot 1 features the charming old White Swan public house, nestled in the thriving village of Brightside. With its close proximity to the railway station and lush gardens surrounding it, this establishment was currently occupied by James Ashmore. Adjacent to it stood a quaint cottage occupied by James Penistone. Moving on to Lot 2, we find a delightful dwelling house with adjoining lands under the care of Mr. James Whitton. Lot 3 boasts an enchanting plantation along with parts of House Croft and Far House Croft. Meanwhile, Lot 4 encompasses Near Pease Field, while Lots 5 and 6 include Far Cow Croft, Near Cow Croft (which fronts Jenkin Lane), Upper Pease Field, and Middle Pease Field (also fronting Jenkin Lane). The highlight of this auction is undoubtedly Lot 7 - valuable beds of coal and other minerals lying beneath all previous lots as well as other areas nearby. Notably, all these parcels of land are perfectly suited for residential development due to their picturesque south-facing slope offering breathtaking views across the Dun Valley. This aspect not only ensures salubrity but also provides ideal conditions for horticulture enthusiasts.
