EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the awe-inspiring scene of the 1854 Crystal Palace Dinosaurs, brought to life by Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins. Measuring just 11cm x 16.3 cm, this miniature color print showcases the George Baxter patent process of multiple ink blocks, resulting in a softened and age-toned image that still retains its vibrant beauty. In the foreground of the Sydenham Crystal Palace stands an array of Hawkins' dinosaur sculptures, which were not only groundbreaking but also remarkably life-sized. From left to right, we can see Teleosaurus gracefully swimming in water while Megalosaurus dominates the land beside it. Hyaeolosaurus and Labyrinthdont (?), both mysterious creatures from prehistoric times, stand alongside Iguanodon with its distinctive horned head. The far-right figure remains unidentified but adds an air of intrigue to this remarkable display. These extraordinary models caused quite a sensation during Victorian England and played a pivotal role in popularizing dinosaurs among the general public. Although time has taken its toll on these sculptures and destroyed their original home at Crystal Palace due to fire, they still survive today in Sydenham Park as a testament to their enduring legacy. This particular print is part of Paul D. Stewart's collection and has been carefully restored and color-corrected for optimal viewing pleasure. It serves as a mesmerizing window into history, showcasing not only artistry but also scientific curiosity that continues to captivate us even today.
