Calcium carbonate, SEM C017 / 8497
False-coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of microscopic crystals of calcium carbonate. Calcium carbonate has many polymorphs (different shaped) crystal forms. The cubic crystals shown here are termed calcite and the smaller, sperical crystals are termed vaterite. The spherical forms are made up of many hexagonal vaterite plates and several can be seen in this image. No aragonite, a spiky or columnar polymorph is present in this image. Calcium carbonate occurs naturally in many rocks, such as limestone and other chalky rocks and is relatively inexpensive to extract. It has a multitude of different industrial uses and is the most common active ingredient in antacid tablets. Image width is 116 microns

Acidity Calcite Calcium Carbonate Chalk Crystal Crystalline Crystals Cubic Electron False Micrograph Microscope Microscopy Scanning
EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate world of calcium carbonate crystals, as captured through a scanning electron microscope. The false-colored image reveals the mesmerizing beauty of these microscopic structures. In this particular sample, we can observe two different polymorphs or crystal forms of calcium carbonate. The larger cubic crystals are known as calcite, while the smaller spherical ones are termed vaterite. The spherical vaterite crystals consist of numerous hexagonal plates that come together to form their unique shape. Interestingly, this image does not feature aragonite, another polymorph characterized by spiky or columnar formations. Calcium carbonate is a naturally occurring compound found in various rocks like limestone and chalky formations. Its extraction process is relatively inexpensive due to its abundance in nature. Beyond its geological significance, calcium carbonate holds immense industrial value with diverse applications. One prominent use lies in antacid tablets where it serves as the primary active ingredient due to its ability to neutralize acidity effectively. Additionally, calcium carbonate finds utility across multiple industries owing to its crystalline structure and chemical properties. This visually stunning photograph with a width measuring 116 microns offers us an intriguing glimpse into the fascinating world of calcium carbonate crystals under high magnification.
