EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the early 1900s, capturing the timeless beauty of Alverton House Lodge in Truro, Cornwall. The exterior of this magnificent manor showcases its oldest section, dating all the way back to 1830 when it was constructed for William Tweedy of Truro Vean. Standing proudly against a backdrop of lush greenery and vibrant flowers, the lodge exudes an air of elegance and history. Intriguingly, two ladies grace the foreground of this image, adding a touch of life and mystery to the scene. Perhaps they were residents or visitors at Alverton House Lodge during that era? We can only wonder about their stories and connection to this remarkable place. Notably, from 1883 until 1983, Alverton House Lodge served as the Home of the Community of Epiphany - a convent where nuns resided. During their time here, they built a chapel which undoubtedly became an integral part of their daily lives. After undergoing transformation in 1984, Alverton House Lodge transitioned into what we now know as a hotel. However, its rich heritage remains intact within these walls. Thanks to photographer Arthur Philp's keen eye for detail and composition skills captured in this photograph print preserved by Royal Cornwall Museum; we are granted a glimpse into both past and present - reminding us that even centuries-old buildings continue to hold significance in our modern world.
