Wall Art and Photo Gifts from Royal Cornwall Museum
Lanlivery Board School, Cornwall. 1979
Built in 1877, this is a good example of a small rural Board School Built under the Elementary Education Act 1870 known as Forsters Education Act. Under the Act the Local Authorities were tasked with providing an elementary schooling for children residing in their areas between the ages of 5-13 years. The Board members were elected by the ratepayers under a voting system different from national elections, since female householders could vote and stand for office. The Education Boards had powers to finance and make by-laws to be tabled before Parliament. The Act established the foundations of English elementary education which was firmly enforced through reforms contained in a number of further Acts. The building has remained a school and now, in 2018, houses Lanlivery Primary Academy. Photographer: Charles Woolf

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Lanlivery Board School in Cornwall, frozen in time during the year 1979. Built over a century earlier in 1877, this charming structure stands as a testament to the small rural schools that flourished under the Elementary Education Act of 1870, also known as Forsters Education Act. During this era, local authorities were entrusted with providing elementary education for children aged between 5 and 13 years residing within their respective areas. The school board members were elected by ratepayers through a unique voting system that allowed female householders to participate both as voters and potential officeholders. Empowered by the Act, these education boards possessed financial autonomy and could propose by-laws to be presented before Parliament. This legislation laid down the foundations of English elementary education and paved the way for subsequent reforms introduced through various Acts. Today, Lanlivery Board School still serves its original purpose but has transformed into Lanlivery Primary Academy since then. Its enduring presence is a testament to its historical significance and continued commitment towards nurturing young minds. Renowned photographer Charles Woolf skillfully captured this image, showcasing not only architectural beauty but also preserving an important piece of educational history within Cornwall's picturesque village landscape.
