EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print from 1964, we witness the exhilarating start of The Observer Trophy Single-handed Trans Atlantic Race in Plymouth. As the yachtsmen set sail for their daring journey across the vast ocean, an unexpected and comical twist unfolds before our eyes. Amidst a sea of sailing and motor boats following the competitors, an amphibious motor car emerges with a splash. Its wash threatens to engulf its passengers, but they remain undeterred by the impending wave. Richard Pilkington takes charge behind the wheel while his wife Patricia accompanies him on this aquatic adventure. Seated behind them are their friends Anne Murray and Penny Swain, who excitedly wave at the crew aboard tall ships as they bid farewell to land. The scene is filled with anticipation and camaraderie as these brave sailors embark on a solitary voyage that will test their skills and endurance. The image perfectly captures both the thrill of racing and the lightheartedness that can be found even in such intense competitions. This photograph serves as a delightful reminder of a bygone era when single-handed transatlantic races were met with great enthusiasm. It transports us back to a time when technology was still finding its way into unconventional places like amphibious vehicles, adding an extra touch of humor to an already thrilling event. Lewis' expert curation has allowed us to relive this extraordinary moment through Memory Lane Prints—a nostalgic window into history's most remarkable moments captured on film.
