Balcony Cairo Farida Guide Guides Review
EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, Queen Farida of Egypt, dressed in her Girl Guide uniform, is seen with her daughter Princess Ferial on the balcony of Abdine Palace in Cairo. The year is unknown, but it is believed to be during the 1950s. Queen Farida, who reigned as the last queen consort of Egypt from 1938 until her husband King Fuad I's death in 1936, was a strong advocate for the education and empowerment of girls and women in Egypt. The Girl Guides movement, which was established in the United Kingdom in 1910 and later introduced to Egypt in 1913, aimed to provide girls with opportunities for personal development and community service. Queen Farida's involvement with the Girl Guides was a reflection of her commitment to promoting the welfare of Egyptian girls and women. In this image, the queen and her daughter are en route to a Girl Guide review, a formal inspection of the Girl Guide units in Egypt. The palace grounds of Abdine, located in the heart of Cairo, serve as the backdrop for this significant moment in Egyptian history. The queen's presence at the review demonstrates her support for the Girl Guides and her dedication to the education and development of young Egyptian girls. Princess Ferial, who was born in 1943, would go on to become an influential figure in her own right. She served as the Egyptian Ambassador to the United States from 1976 to 1981 and was the first Egyptian woman to hold such a position. This photograph captures a rare moment of mother and daughter together, highlighting the important role models they represented for Egyptian girls and women during a time of significant social change in Egypt.
