EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the ancient city of Tyre in Lebanon, circa 1890. The image, captured by an unknown creator, showcases the rich history and architectural beauty of this Phoenician city on the Mediterranean coast. Tyre's fascinating past is evident in its ruined buildings and rooftops that stand as a testament to centuries of civilization. From its Byzantine era under the rule of the Byzantine Empire to its occupation by Arabs in 638, Tyre has witnessed numerous dynasties come and go. The photograph captures a man standing on a rooftop against the backdrop of this historic cityscape. His presence adds depth and scale to the scene, emphasizing both the grandeur and abandonment that coexist within these ruins. With its monochrome aesthetic, this print from Cassells Illustrated Universal History transports us into a different era. It serves as a window into Tyre's medieval past while also inviting contemplation about our own place within history. As we gaze upon this image, we are reminded of how landscapes change over time but continue to hold echoes of their former glory. This print is not just an artistic representation; it is a tangible connection between our present-day world and the stories engraved within these ancient walls.
