EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white lithograph captures Scottish missionary and explorer David Livingstone navigating the treacherous Zambezi River in Africa during his expeditions from 1852 to 1864. The image showcases Livingstone's steamer Ma-Robert as it braves a crocodile-infested stretch of the river, symbolizing the dangers he faced in his quest for discovery. Livingstone holds a significant place in history as the first European to stumble upon the majestic Victoria Falls on the Zambezi River. This remarkable achievement solidified his reputation as an intrepid explorer, driven by curiosity and a thirst for knowledge about uncharted territories. However, this print also serves as a poignant reminder of Livingstone's later struggles. While searching for the source of the Nile years after this expedition, he fell seriously ill and went missing. It was not until Henry Morton Stanley found him in 1871 that Livingstone was rescued. Sadly, despite being saved from perilous circumstances, he never fully recovered from his illness and eventually passed away in Bangwelulu, Zambia. The monochrome aesthetic adds depth to this historical moment captured by an unknown creator. It transports viewers back to the nineteenth century when exploration was at its peak and highlights both nature's beauty and its potential dangers. This lithograph stands as a testament to Livingstone's enduring legacy as one of Britain's most celebrated explorers who fearlessly ventured into unexplored lands with unwavering determination.
