5927574 Lieutenant-Colonel William Miller (1785-1815), 1st Foot Guards, in civilian dress, 1814 circa (silhouette on card) by Unknown Artist, (19th century); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: Lieutenant-Colonel William Miller (1785-1815), 1st Foot Guards, in civilian dress, 1814 circa.
Silhouette portrait in pen and ink and watercolour on card, artist unknown, 1814 circa.
William Miller (1784-1815) was appointed Lieutenant-Colonel of the 3rd Battalion, 1st Regiment of Foot Guards, on 3 March 1814. Miller, a veteran of the Peninsular War, was actually wounded at the Battle of Quatre Bras on 16 June 1815. He immediately sent for his friend, Colonel C Thomas (himself killed two days later at Waterloo), and stated I feel I am mortally wounded, but I am pleased to think it is my fate rather than yours, whose life is involved in that of your young wife. After a pause, he went on: I should like to see the colours of the Regiment before I quit them for everA. Miller died of his wounds in Brussels the following day.); eNational Army Museum; out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
The captivating print showcases Lieutenant-Colonel William Miller, a distinguished member of the 1st Foot Guards, in civilian attire. This silhouette portrait, created by an unknown artist in the early 19th century, captures the essence of a brave and noble soldier. Lieutenant-Colonel William Miller's story is one of sacrifice and honor. Having fought valiantly in the Peninsular War, he was appointed as Lieutenant-Colonel of the 3rd Battalion, 1st Regiment of Foot Guards in March 1814. The image depicts him during this period when he transitioned from military to civilian life. Tragically, Miller's life took a fateful turn during the Battle of Quatre Bras on June 16th, 1815. Severely wounded on that battlefield, he summoned his dear friend Colonel C Thomas to his side. In their poignant conversation amidst impending doom, Miller expressed relief that fate had chosen him instead of Thomas whose young wife depended on him for her safety. With unwavering loyalty to his regiment until his last breaths were drawn in Brussels just one day later due to his injuries sustained at Quatre Bras; Miller requested a final glimpse at the colors representing his beloved battalion before departing forever. This powerful photograph immortalizes Lieutenant-Colonel William Miller's courage and selflessness—a testament to all those who have made ultimate sacrifices for their comrades and country throughout history.
